  • The petition alleged Northport police were incompetent in handling the cases
  • More than 3,400 people have signed the petition as of Monday morning
  • Investigators are trying to piece together what happened to Petito and her boyfriend

As the mystery behind the deaths of Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie continues, thousands of people have signed a petition seeking a formal investigation into the handling of evidence in the cases.

The change.org petition, addressed to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has been signed by more than 3,400 people. The petition urged the authorities to start an “internal investigation into this case,” but added that the “bigger picture is to bring about change.” The petition has been titled "Gabby's Safe Haven 2.0."

The petition alleged that Northport police were incompetent in handling both Petito and Laundrie's cases, and specifically called for an investigation into “handling the case by Northport Police Station, Northport City Public Relations Officer Josh Taylor, and Northport Police Chief Todd Garrison.”

“Millions of taxpayers’ money was spent on this survey in a month, with little or no results. Within a day of the search area being open to the public, of interest. One’s parents were that person. [sic] To discover the belongings of their son."

The petition raised questions about the “evidence handling and management process,” and said it was “very suspicious.”

“The search area was reopened after the ruins of Brian Laundrie were discovered and confirmed. [sic] It was reopened to the public within 24 hours of its discovery."

Laundrie was the only one named as a person of interest in the strangulation death of Gabby Petito, his fiancée, whose body was found near a Wyoming national park on Sept. 19. Laundrie's remains were found two weeks ago in the Carlton Reserve in Florida. A comparison of dental records confirmed Laundrie's identity, according to the FBI.

Recently, the police in Florida said Laundrie “probably” died by suicide well before his remains were discovered on Oct. 20. The exact cause of death could not be determined after his initial autopsy was ruled inconclusive due to advanced decomposition.

Meanwhile, investigators are trying to piece together what exactly happened to Petito during her cross-country van trip with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, with Laundrie's death, it’s unclear if Petito's family will ever find answers regarding her homicide. Last week, Laundrie family's lawyer Steven Bertolino said the 23-year-old's remains are yet to be handed over to the family.
