Burger King Holdings Inc , the No. 2 U.S. hamburger chain, has been talking to private equity firms for a possible sale, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said British private equity firm 3i Group Plc was one of the interested parties. It was uncertain whether the talks would result in a sale, the report said.

The WSJ said a spokeswoman for Burger King declined comment, while 3i was not available for comment.

Both companies could not be immediately reached by Reuters for comment outside regular U.S. business hours.
