Police say a bus carrying members of an opera troupe plunged into a gorge in a forest in India on Sunday evening, killing at least 25 people and leaving another 11 critically injured.

Press Trust of India reported the bus was traveling in a hilly region of the eastern state of Orissa, and was attempting a sharp turn when it fell 250 feet.

Deogarh Police Superintendent Sarah Sharma said, “Twenty-five bodies have so far been been recovered” out of about 40 passengers, PTI reported. Eleven people are in critical condition at Deogarh hospital, she said.

The troupe was returning from a performance in Deogarh district to Bargarh district, PTI reported.

India has some of the world's deadliest roads with more than 200,000 fatalities annually, according to the World Health Organization.
