  • Reps for Canelo Alvarez, DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions met this week to work out their differences, reports say
  • Alvarez was offered new terms that guaranteed $20 million per fight and a bonus
  • The Mexican boxer's breach-of-contract lawsuit was dismissed on a technicality earlier this month

The drama between Canelo Alvarez, DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions is far from over, though all parties involved are believed to be holding discussions. With the camp of Alvarez forced to amend and re-submit their federal lawsuit, the window offers a chance for them to thresh out the misunderstandings.

The breach-of-contract lawsuit Alvarez filed Sept. 8 was dismissed on a technicality. They have been given two weeks to make the necessary changes and file again. But now, all that could depend on how things go during alleged talks.

ESPN Deportes reported, citing unnamed sources, that representatives for Alvarez, DAZN and Golden Boy held a meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to discuss the issues stemming from his lawsuit and hash out a new deal.

Alvarez was offered new terms that guaranteed $20 million per fight and a bonus tied to the number of DAZN subscribers each event generates, unnamed sources told The Athletic.

Earlier this month, Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya said that they plan to negotiate with Alvarez after his lawsuit was thrown out.

"While yesterday’s order does not end the case, we are hopeful that this error will allow us to reset, and refocus on what’s important – working together to get Canelo back in the ring against a top opponent ASAP," he tweeted Sept. 12.

"If not, we expect Canelo’s lawyers will now enter arbitration as is laid out in our contract," he said in a follow-up tweet.

There is no clarity on how these talks will go. Alvarez has not fought since November, and the issue cropped up with a fourth fight yet to happen. It turns out that DAZN wants the Mexican to face Gennady Golovkin even if that does not appear workable right now.

So far, Alvarez has fought three times under the watch of DAZN and Golden Boy. These were against Rocky Fielding, Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev.

Golden Boy was planning to line up Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders, but DAZN did not appear to be on board with the idea. Things went from bad to worse when DAZN was willing to pay only a portion of the $40 million license fee for an Alvarez fight. The Mexican was to get $35 million from that amount.

Alvarez bats that he did not give DAZN the right to decide on who he wants to face. It was Golden Boy who gave that right, which Alvarez said was done without his knowledge. That led to the filing of the lawsuit in which the Mexican is seeking $280 million in damages.

Aside from that, Alvarez is also seeking the remainder of his contract and a judicial determination that he is eligible to participate in bouts arranged and promoted by entities other than Golden Boy Promotions and broadcast by entities other than DAZN.

For now, the good news is that all parties are talking with hopes of settling everything amicably. If the discussions bog down, the Mexican boxing champ could refile the lawsuit, which he has until Monday, Sept. 28, to do.
