GGG and Kovalev could possibly become Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent if certain things will happen.

Alvarez remains the biggest name in boxing despite the fact that he has been stripped off his IBF title. An array of world champions are hoping to get a shot at Alvarez but recently, it appears that Alvarez has trimmed the list down to just two fighters, WBO light heavyweight champ Sergey Kovalev and long-time rival Gennady Golovkin.

As for Kovalev’s case, it has been reported that Alvarez would fight the light heavyweight champ if he will managed to score a win on his next bout.

Kovalev’s manager Egis Klimas recently told Boxing Scene that Alvarez is just waiting for Kovalev to win his bout on August 14 against Anthony Yarde. Klimas even noted that Kovalev’s win would almost like “putting the signature on the contract to Alvarez.”

“Canelo has stated he doesn’t want to fight anybody else. He wants to fight Kovalev. He’s waiting right now on this fight result. The fight against Yarde is a big motivation for Sergey, too. Winning this fight against Yarde will lead him to Alvarez and it’s almost like putting the signature on the contract to Alvarez,” Klimas said.

Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s promoter and head of Main Event Boxing, also confirmed that Kovalev needs to win first before they jump into talks of Alvarez fight.

"First, Sergey has to make it through with a win and unscathed. Fingers crossed.”

According to Klimas, considering that Canelo is a “pretty big guy,” the move to light heavyweight for the potential fight against Kovalev should not be much of an issue.

“If you put him on the scale right now, I don’t think he’s less than 175. I’m more than sure he’s eating healthy and will be much stronger at 175 than he was at 160 or 168,” Klimas pointed.

On the other hand, a third match with Golovkin has been revived Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya himself. In a recent interview with ESPN, De La Hoya said that both Alvarez and Golovkin want to make the fight happen. And if the fans really push hard for it, there’s a possibility for it to finally materialize.

"I strongly feel that we will see a third fight. I strongly feel that being the warrior that Canelo is, and obviously 'GGG' being willing to fight Canelo, again I think the demand is there from the fans. I don't know how soon we'll see it, but I think eventually we will," De La Hoya said.

Golovkin and his side believe that they are guaranteed a fight with Alvarez. However, Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, said it all depends on Alvarez's decision.

"It's up to [Alvarez]. He has a win over [Golovkin] and it's totally up to him if he wants to do it or not,'' Gomez said.
