Canelo Alvarez will be dropping back down to 160 pounds following his super middleweight title win over Rocky Fielding on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, New York.

Alvarez unleashed a barrage of body shots to ultimately claim a third round stoppage win over the Briton and in the process, become a three-weight champion.

And having controversially defeated Gennady Golovkin in their September rematch to win the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council middleweight titles, he will now look to add the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title to his collection as a May 2019 fight with Daniel Jacobs seems imminent.

According to the report by @BarbosaBox, it could take place on May 4 -- a day before the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo when Alvarez usually competes.

Jacobs notably had a close contest with Golovkin last year as many felt he was the one who had inflicted the Kazakh's first loss only to lose a unanimous decision.

When Golovkin was stripped of the IBF title earlier this year, Jacobs would go on to defeat Sergiy Derevyanchenko to win the vacant title in October.

The American was ringside for Alvarez's "phenomenal" win over Fielding and hoped that being a champion, he got to face the Mexican next, despite the interest of a trilogy fight with Golovkin.

"That's a fight [Canelo vs Jacobs] that is very possible," Jacobs said after the fight. "With [David] Lemieux unfortunately being out now with health issues, there's even more of a stronger possibility that the fight can happen."

"Me being champion helps also. I'm not sure if they want to do the trilogy with [Gennady] Golovkin. It's time for the fans to see something different, I guess a new champion. Outside of Canelo-GGG, [it] makes the most sense. It's about reaching the pinnacle of my career, fighting the best fights out there, I want the fights that the fans respect."

Jacobs' promoter Eddie Hearn also believed a title unification bout was likely as he called it the "best fight" at 160 pounds.

“It’s the best fight in the middleweight division," Hearn said. "You’ve got Danny Jacobs who had a fight with Gennady Golovkin, very close, many people thought he won that fight."

"He’s now world champion, that’s a unification fight, it’s a real middleweight matchup. That’s the one that myself, Keith Connolly, DAZN, everyone is pushing for for Cinco de Mayo.”

Of course, things could change in an instant as well. Golovkin is currently in search of a new broadcast home and will reportedly be making his decision before the end of the year.

Should he join Alvarez at DAZN, it seems almost inevitable that a trilogy fight between the pair would be booked as it is one of the most lucrative fights in the sport today.
