“Young Sheldon” Season 1 premiered right after “Big Bang Theory” on Monday night.

The series introduced young Sheldon (Iain Armitage) and his family while living in East Texas. The prequel series to the hit CBS sitcom takes place in 1989 when Sheldon was still a young boy. The events that took place in the new show, as well as some of Sheldon’s thoughts and realizations, were narrated by the adult Sheldon (Jim Parsons).

Young Sheldon” opens with Sheldon playing with his trains in the garage. He gets called by his parents so they could all have dinner together, and this was when the young Mary Cooper (Zoe Perry) was introduced. Sheldon and his mom, Mary, have a wonderful relationship with each other. But the same thing cannot be said about Sheldon’s bond with his siblings and dad.

At the age of 9, Sheldon heads to high school and lands in the same class as his older brother, Georgie (Montana Jordan). The latter is not thrilled to be classmates with his brother especially since he’s very smart, and he isn’t. Georgie gets picked on in school for the simple reason that he’s related to Sheldon.

The smart kid also has a twin sister named Missy (Reagan Revord). The two share a room with each other, but are not necessarily close. Missy is in third grade, and she’s happy to not be in the same grade level as her brother.

One of the highlights from the premiere episode was when Sheldon had a heart-to-heart conversation with his dad, George Sr. (Lance Barber). The patriarch tells Sheldon that he should mind his own business because he lost his job for snitching on his colleagues. Sheldon asks his dad if he’s sad over his firing, and he said yes.

While saying grace at the dinner table, Sheldon holds his dad’s hand for the first time ever. Usually, the lead character would wear gloves to avoid skin-to-skin contact with his dad and older brother.

Following the show’s successful premiere, “Big Bang Theory” showrunner Steve Holland was asked whether or not a crossover is possible in the future. While speaking with Deadline, he said, “We haven’t talked about that specifically. There certainly could be things that happened in the past that we can reference on the show. Right now their goal is setting that show up… But in the future we’ve certainly talked about things that you can see characters that are introduced in Sheldon’s world on that show that we could revisit as adults on our show,” he said.

“Young Sheldon” Season 1 airs Mondays at 8:30 p.m. EDT on CBS.
