KEY POINTS

  • Authorities charged a white couple after the wife drew a handgun against a Black mom and her daughter
  • A full video showed the daughter asking for an apology from the white woman for allegedly bumping her
  • The Black mom slapped the car of the couple when it backed out, which drove the wife to get out with a gun

Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper filed felonious assault charges against Michigan couple Jillian and Eric Wuestenberg for pointing a gun at Takelia Hill.

Demand For An Apology

The alleged confrontation started when Makayla, Hill's 15-year-old daughter, told Detroit News she had asked for an apology from the white woman for bumping into her. It was not immediately clear at what point did Makayla start recording. But, the situation may already have escalated a bit as shouting can already be heard in the video.

The white woman, later identified as Jillian Wuestenberg, was seen raising her hands as Hill demands for an apology from her. Jillian was also heard saying the Hills are blocking her way, ostensibly from getting into her car.

A few seconds later, her husband, Eric Wuestenberg, was seen on video walking over to the passenger side of the vehicle and opening the door for Jillian as Hill continues to demand an apology from her and calling her “racist.” He also asked who “the f---“ they are, referring to the Hills. All the while, Makayla, who was holding the cellphone camera, can be heard saying “she’s ignorant,” apparently referring to Jillian.

Pointed A Gun

The situation quickly escalated when Hill, who was seen behind the vehicle of the Wuestenbergs, slapped the back of the car, hard enough for the video to capture the sound, as it backed out its parking space. At this point, Jillian can be seen going out of the vehicle with a gun and pointing the weapon at Hill, shouting and telling her to get out of the way. “Don’t you f------ jump behind my car,” she also shouted at Hill.

The shouting continued as Jillian reenters the car, and the last part of the video shows the car backing out again. A full video, which was uploaded on YouTube, has since then gained several thousand views and gone viral.

Two Versions Of The Incident

During a press conference, Thursday (July 2,) Sheriff Mike Bouchard played in public 911 calls relating to the incident. He said that one of the calls came from Jillian, who was seen in the video holding the gun, saying she felt threatened. The other calls came from bystanders and Chipotle employees, who described a white woman pointing a gun several black women.

According to Bouchard, the Wuestenberg couple had legal handguns, and they also have pistol licenses. The charges filed against them were about threatening Hill and her daughters. Sheriff Bouchard added that detectives looking into the incident were given two very different versions from two parties, with each party claiming they felt very threatened.
