Chelsea is adding another important piece in Thomas Tuchel's already-stacked squad.

It is said that plenty of defenders will be up for grabs in the next transfer windows.

Whether it is true or not, Chelsea might not have to worry about as the club is now closing in on sealing a long-term deal for Trevoh Chalobah, various outlets reported, including Football.london.

The 22-year-old’s current deal with Chelsea is set to expire in 2022, and talks over a new deal are already in the works, the report added.

Chalobah has been a revelation for Chelsea this season, having impressed in the club’s pre-season matches.

He spent the last season on loan at French side FC Lorient and made his return to Stamford Bridge join the Blues for the 2021-22 campaign.

After Chalobah’s s notable pre-season and terrific showing in Chelsea’s Super Cup victory over Villarreal, Blues boss Tuchel reportedly decided to end the youngster’s loan spell and rewarded him with a spot in his senior team roster.

Recently evaluating Chalobah’s form, Tuchel raved that the “very strong” defender is the type of player the team needs at the moment.

The German coach is also certain that Chalobah is ready for English football.

"Absolutely that’s why he played," Tuchel said at a post-game press conference when asked if Chalobah was ready to play in the English Premier League. “We wanted to have guys on the field who are capable to play 90 minutes. Trevoh was first in training, the very first in training and is physically strong and deserved to play by his performances so far, and again today he was very strong.”

"He forced his way into our thinking,” he added. “ Let’s see how it goes. We still have some days to decide his personal future but in the moment he shows his value to the team."

This season, Chalobah has already played a total of nine matches across all competitions for Chelsea, notching two goals in the process.

Commenting on his own progress, Chalobah acknowledged the importance of staying active while on loan in the development of his game.

“For me, my loans have been successful because I got the games and the experience I needed,” Chalobah told Chelsea’s official website.

“I was very confident going there. I knew the ability I had and that is what I want to showcase.”
