According to latest reports, West London-based Premiership heavyweights Chelsea have targeted French Ligue 1 side Marseille's young Spanish U23 right back Cesar Azpilicueta and will make an attempt to land the player when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.

Chelsea reportedly have targeted a number of defensive options after owner Roman Abramovich stressed upon signing two talented fullbacks and decided to hand over a whooping spending amount of $394.19 million (£247 million) to the manager whom the club appoints next.

Azpilicueta, 22, who himself is a product of his Spanish hometown side CA Osasuna's youth system, has been on the list of players who have selected by the club after the owner sent out his scouting staff on a six-month global project to find the most talented footballers on the planet as an effort to completely rebuild the squad.

The Blues are believed to have prepared a transfer fee of $39.90 million (£25 million) for the Spanish youngster and this may become a problem for Marseille to hold on to the player as the youngster may find it tempting to serve Chelsea which is one of the power-houses of Europe and are probable Champions League winners this season.

Among the others on the list, Chelsea have targeted Uruguay and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, Tottenham and Croatian playmaker Luka Modric and Porto's Brazilian Winger Hulk, according to a Daily Mail report.

Azpilicueta, who arrived at French Ligue 1 side Marseille from Spanish La Liga club Osasuna in 2010, has made 19 league appearances for the Stade Velodrome-based side. He was in the Spanish U19 team that won the UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship in 2007 as well as in the UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship team that won in 2011.
