The Cleveland Browns have made a significant addition late in free agency, signing defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The former No. 1 overall draft pick joins a team that has high expectations for the 2021 NFL season.

Clowney on Wednesday inked a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, according to multiple reports. The pass rusher had discussions with Cleveland last year but signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the Tennessee Titans instead.

The Browns are Clowney’s fourth team in as many seasons. The 28-year-old hasn’t been very productive since being selected to his third straight Pro Bowl in 2018. In 21 games with the Titans and Seattle Seahawks over the last two years, Clowney only has three sacks and 50 total tackles.

Clowney totaled 18.5 sacks from 2017-18 with the Houston Texans. If he can get anywhere close to matching that productive next season, Cleveland should have one of the league’s top pass rushes.

“We’re excited to add Jadeveon to our defensive line,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said in a statement. “He’s a disruptive force that will help us against the run and the pass. We’ve been able to make some nice additions to our defense throughout free agency and we are looking forward to getting to work, so we can improve our team.”

Myles Garrett is one of the top defensive players in football with 12 sacks in 14 games last season. Olivier Vernon added nine sacks for the Browns in 2020.

Only the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens enter the 2021 season with better odds to win the AFC than Cleveland. The Browns have 20/1 Super Bowl odds and 10/1 odds to reach Super Bowl LVI, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

The Browns went 11-5 in 2020, posting their best record since the franchise was revived in 1999. Cleveland defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wild-Card Weekend, winning its first playoff game in 26 years.
