New York Mayor Bill de Blasio did not mince words for President Trump at a Tuesday press conference. Reacting to Trump’s recent comments about bailing out blue states, de Blasio ripped the President as a “pure hypocrite” inclined to ignore the suffering of people in cities and regions led by Democrats.

“The President of the United States — a former New Yorker who seems to enjoy stabbing his home town in the back — [is] talking about no bailout for New York,” the mayor said. “What kind of human being sees the suffering here and decides that people in New York City don’t deserve help? What kind of person does that?”

Trump’s comments came from an interview with the New York Post, where he explicitly stated that Republicans should oppose aid for states with Democrat leaders.

“I think Congress is inclined to do a lot of things but I don’t think they’re inclined to do bailouts,” Trump said. “It’s not fair to the Republicans because all the states that need help — they’re run by Democrats in every case.”

New York City has become one of the major worldwide epicenters for the coronavirus outbreak. Johns Hopkins University reports that the city has seen nearly 177,000 confirmed cases of the virus and over 18,000 deaths.

At the same briefing, de Blasio tore into Trump for his hesitance to bail out states, considering all the relief that his administration has given to corporations.

“He’s not inclined to do bailouts now?” de Blasio said. “That means he’s not inclined to help firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, police officers, doctors, nurses, health care workers. He’s a pure hypocrite, given how much money he’s put in the hands of the corporations and the wealthy already.”
