‘Criminal Minds’
Agent Stephen Walker (Damon Gupton) was killed off in “Criminal Minds” Season 13 episode 1. CBS

“Criminal Minds” Season 13 recently saw the death of a major character in the premiere.

On Wednesday night, the entire BAU team was involved in a car accident, and Stephen Walker (Damon Gupton) did not make it out alive. Even though his death did not come as a surprise, viewers were still expecting that Gupton will be written out of the hit CBS procedural drama.

Last summer, Gupton announced his departure from the series via his Twitter account. In his tweet, the actor said that he just lost his job. Gupton was cast in “Criminal Minds” last season as a “replacement” for Thomas Gibson.

The actor, who played the role of Hotch, got into an altercation with one of the show’s writers. He was placed on leave and was later on fired by ABC Studios, the company that produces the CBS drama, according to Entertainment Weekly. Afterwards, Gupton was cast to play the role of Agent Walker.

Prior to the agent’s death, “Criminal Minds” cast member Adam Rodriguez already teased the shocking incident during an interview with the same publication. “The show picks up where it left off, which was at an intense moment, a car accident, and no, not everybody makes it,” he said.

Meanwhile, if the BAU team had to say goodbye to one member, they will also have the chance to welcome another character into their group. Daniel Henney has been cast to reprise his role as Agent Matt Simmons from the now canceled series, “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.”

Henney spoke with Entertainment Weekly last month about how his character will fit into the team. “On ‘Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,’ the IRT was disbanded… they were deposed, actually… so that gave my character a chance to be not only unemployed, but available. When they had this huge incident go down towards the end of the last season, they were out in the field and Garcia’s character was back in the office and in need of some support. So she called Matt because that’s who she knows. And I show up to help out,” he explained.

“Criminal Minds” Season 13 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
