KEY POINTS

  • The Dallas Cowboys trim down their roster ahead of the new season
  • Dallas may bring back old faces if they are unable to find a better personnel
  • Some players on the roster could be placed on the injured reserve list

The Dallas Cowboys, like other NFL teams, are busy trying to figure out who to retain to meet the 53-man roster limit with the deadline fast approaching.

Based on the latest reports, the Cowboys may have made an uncanny move with reports that they have released a couple of play-callers.

According to a report by ESPN, Dallas has released Will Grier and Cooper Rush, meaning Dak Prescott will be the lone quarterback for the Cowboys this coming NFL season.

However, Todd Archer explains that while Grier and Rush may have been released, it doesn't mean that either cannot return.

Hence, the move of the Cowboys to release the two could be a move for something else.

One of them is to see if there are other quarterbacks possibly available in the market that they can take in to back up Prescott.

Another possible reason is that Dallas wants more flexibility to properly comprise its 53-man roster.

Hence, it is possible that one among Grier and Rush could be recalled to serve as Dak Prescott's backup.

Between the two, Grier is reportedly subject to waivers. Rush, on the other hand, is not.

According to the scribe, there is a chance that both Grier and Rush may return to Dallas.

The 28-year-old Rush has spent most of his career with the Cowboys.

Last season, he played in five games and had one start.

In all, he completed 30 of 47 passes for 422 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

As for Grier, the former third-round pick of the Carolina Panthers was claimed off waivers in September.

Grier could end up as a practice squad candidate if he continues to go unclaimed off waivers.

It should be noted that this is an initial roster cut and changes could follow in the coming weeks.

There could be other names getting released as the Cowboys try to make room for potential additions.

Moreover, it remains to be seen who would be placed on the injured reserve list.

Among the names who could be placed there include Kelvin Joseph and John Ridgeway, two players who reportedly had issues during camp.
