“Dancing With the Stars” has been looking for ways to make some major changes the last few seasons, especially since new host/executive producer Tyra Banks took over in Season 29, but there is one change they haven’t yet made. However, at least one of the show’s current pros is advocating for it to happen.

While the ABC hasn’t shied away from diverse casting or choosing controversial names, one route it has yet to go is to cast a same-sex couple as dancers, by partnering either a male celebrity and pro dancer or female celebrities and pros. However, while producers have maybe shied away from it, Gleb Savchenko, one of the pros who has competed on eight seasons of the show so far, revealed in an interview with Mr. Warburton Magazine that he would be up to doing it, and had hoped to get the chance when the show cast Johnny Weir in Season 29.

“I can’t wait for this moment! Last season when Johnny Weir got on the show I was like, ‘Johnny, you HAVE to be my partner,’ but they ended up not doing it,” he said.

Weir was partnered with first-time pro Britt Stweart, with whom he placed sixth, while Savchenko competed with Chrishell Stause, who was eighth.

Savchenko also noted that the U.S. series is the one version that hasn’t, with other international versions doing it before, and while dancing has always had a strong foothold in the world of male/female partnerships, he thinks it would be a great change.

“Of course, there is a strong male/female dynamic in dance, but if you have two men doing the same thing it would look awesome and be so fascinating,” he said. “I would love to do it, but it would have to be with the right partner.”

The idea of same-sex partnerships has been floated for the show in the past, with one of the show’s former producers, Steven Price, and former host Tom Bergeron, both stating in 2020 that it was “overdue” for the show to have a same-sex partnership.

It had also been reportedly considered for three previous male celebrities—Lance Bass in Season 7, Carson Kressley in Season 13 and Adam Rippon in Season 26—who are all gay and had allegedly expressed desire to dance with men, though they all went on to dance with female pros. Rippon went on to win his season with Jenna Johnson.

A 30th Season of “Dancing With the Stars” has not been officially announced by ABC.
