Twitter users were sent into a frenzy after Washington D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser posted a pornographic anime meme in celebration of the Fourth of July.

Bowser celebrated the U.S. Independence Day by tweeting out a lewd anime meme featuring fast-food mascots -- McDonald’s Ronald McDonald and KFC’s Colonel Sanders -- holding up the breasts of fellow food-mascot Wendy from Wendy’s, who was only covered with food items.

The controversial tweet also had a photo featuring The Weekend and a scantily clad woman.

"Thanks for joining us in the Palisades today DC!" the mayor's tweet read. While Bowser took down the tweet a minute after it was posted around 1.37 p.m., Twitter users managed to capture the post. Politiwoops, a site that tracks deleted tweets from politicians, also documented the lewd post.

Mayor Bowser’s Fourth of July post earned mixed reactions from Twitter users. Some people laughed at the incident, while others offered sympathies to the intern, who they assumed to be the person responsible for the post.

“Happy july 4 to mayor bowser's social media staff only,” Joshua Bote, a reporter for SFGate, tweeted.

“Somebody come get your intern,” Natalia Antonova, a journalist, tweeted.

“Well that intern has certainly been fired,” actor Geoff Pilkington tweeted.

Purple Vulpes, the web artist behind the lewd anime meme, shared screenshots of Bowser’s post with a caption that read: “I'M ON THE FREAKIN COVER IT YOU GUYSSSSSS.”

Thousands of Americans poured out into the streets of Washington D.C. on Sunday to celebrate Independence Day.

In Constitution Avenue, actors dressed as George and Martha Washington greeted tourists. In the National Mall, crowds of people packed every store as the state no longer requires citizens to observe social distancing measures, according to The Washington Post.

Many Americans also attended the parade in Northwest D.C. that featured a free picnic, live music, and moon bounces at the end of the path, according to WTOP.

The capital capped off the Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks, which were set off after 9 p.m. near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
