  • Cam F Awesome admits being a big fan of Tyson Fury
  • Awesome lauds Fury for using boxing to address important issues
  • The former Golden winner calls Fury the "real-life Rocky"

Cam F. Awesome, originally known as Lenroy Thompson, is best known for winning the US title in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2014 at super heavyweight.

However, he is perhaps one of the talented boxers who opted to stay in the amateur ranks rather than to turn professional.

The 33-year-old from Uniondale, New York had his share of down moments, particularly in 2013.

This was the time he was suspended for a year by the US Anti-Doping Agency for multiple failures to provide his location for drug testing.

However, it also allowed him to start fresh, which prompted the name change to Cam F. Awesome.

Appearing in an exclusive interview on Sports For All PH, the multi-titled boxer-turned-actor answered several questions thrown by the panel composed of journalists Vincent Juico and Brian Yalung along with Filipino pro boxer Rica Aquino.

There was a wide variety of questions that Awesome answered that included Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Conor McGregor and so on.

He admitted that he is fond of southpaw fighters, a reason why he normally bets on Pacquiao and Errol Spence Jr.

But aside from those familiar boxing names, he was asked for his take on a heavyweight boxer named Tyson Fury.

Initially, it appeared he was not too thrilled about the “Gypsy King,” but the former Golden Gloves winner turned out to be an ardent admirer of a 32-year-old heavyweight boxer.

Awesome recalled the time when Fury attended a 2015 press conference and emerged in a Batman costume for his fight with Wladimir Klitschko.

The amateur boxer conceded that this made the Briton one of his favorite heavyweight boxers of all time.

“When I saw him come out in a Batman costume, he became my favorite heavyweight boxer of all time. Also, he may be on the list above me. I have been a fan of him ever since,” Awesome stated.

However, his fascination for Fury goes beyond that. Admittedly, someone who takes boxing tactically and wisely, Awesome admires the ploy of the “Gypsy King” in using boxing as a platform to deal with things like depression and drug addiction.

“The fact that he has dealt with drug addiction, dealt with depression.. the fact that he is dealing with things and using boxing as a platform to talk about those things… he talks a lot of sh*t. But it's never about boxing. It’s just who he is. He is just that and I love his personality,” Awesome stressed.

But beyond that, Awesome lauded Fury for simply who he is.

“I love that he is awkward, I love his confidence, I love his sincerity and I love his story of being the ‘Gypsy King’ and being that guy who everyone looks at as the champion… as the real 'Rocky' story of his people. Yet to see him in that spotlight? People don’t get to see their people on that type of stage. How can you root against that?” he explained.
