KEY POINTS

  • Catalysts for Whisper of the Worm, Outbreak Perfected and the Fourth Horseman will return as world drops
  • The catalysts will start dropping from any activity once the "Witch Queen" expansion is released
  • The missions tied to the exotic weapons will not return in the future

Some of “Destiny 2’s” exotic weapons will finally be getting their catalysts after almost a year since “Beyond Light’s” release, giving many new players a chance to push their equipment to their peak potential.

Formerly unavailable weapon catalysts will now be part of the general activities loot pool upon the release of the “Witch Queen” expansion this coming February, Forbes reported. The weapons include the Outbreak Perfected, Whisper of the Worm and the Fourth Horseman, Bungie’s weapon design lead Chris Proctor said in the DCP podcast.

Once the “Witch Queen” is released, players will be able to obtain these catalysts as random drops after defeating any enemy in the system, just like the other catalysts in the game.

Previously, the catalysts for Outbreak Perfected and the Whisper were only obtainable from the Master difficulty variants of their respective missions. Meanwhile, the Fourth Horseman’s catalyst could only be obtained from Legendary Lost Sectors tied to the season the weapon was released in.

Nearly every exotic catalyst improves their respective weapons tremendously. Whisper of the Worm’s upgrade in particular could be incredibly powerful in the “Witch Queen” and its upcoming season. With the Particle Deconstruction mod set to be removed from the game after “Season Of The Lost” ends, sniper rifles may possibly see a return in Bungie’s curated meta.

For those who don’t know, Whisper of the Worm’s catalyst grants it an additional perk in the form of Whispered Breathing, which is a vastly superior version of the Box Breathing perk. Whispered Breathing will greatly increase the weapon’s range and precision damage after a few seconds of scoping in.

Together with the Mulligan and White Nail perks that can completely negate the weapon’s hunger for ammunition, a fully-upgraded Whisper of the Worm can easily decimate bosses with large precision hitboxes like Riven or Atheon.

Both Outbreak Perfected and the Fourth Horseman were once top-tier DPS exotics when they were released but since Bungie mixes up the meta for each season, they have since fallen out of favor.

The return of these catalysts should bring the weapons back into the spotlight to some degree, but fans will have to wait until Bungie reveals the seasonal mods to determine if any of these guns will be worth using over the others.
