A quack doctor and his assistant have been arrested in India after a 14-year-old girl accused them of sexually assaulting her.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, told the police that she was on her way to buy groceries from a local market on Tuesday in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. While she was on her way, the doctor, identified as Rambabu, called her inside his clinic.

When she entered the clinic, Rambabu and his assistant, identified as Achche, allegedly confined her. They then took turns to rape her. Eventually, the suspects let her go.

The girl returned home crying and in pain and recounted the whole ordeal to her mother. The mother filed a complaint against the suspects on the same night.

"My daughter trusted the doctor and stepped into the clinic where she was locked inside a room," the girl’s mother said to the Times of India. "She was slapped and threatened to remain quiet when she resisted and the doctor along with his assistant raped her. We want strict action against the accused," the mother added.

Both the men were arrested and charged with rape and appropriate sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The girl underwent a medical examination on Wednesday. According to the police, preliminary reports confirmed rape.

"We took immediate action after receiving a complaint. Both the accused were detained. The FIR was registered under the sections of rape and Pocso Act. The survivor is in hospital in Shahjahanpur and her condition is stable," officer Ajab Singh said to the outlet.

In September, a 26-year-old man in India was arrested for allegedly raping three minors, aged 3, 5 and 7 on separate occasions. The suspect confessed to killing the 3-year-old girl and abusing her corpse.

According to the data published by National Crime Records Bureau, the nation witnessed a 13 percent drop in crime committed against children in 2020 compared to 2019.

"Though there is a drop in total number of crimes against children, child marriage has increased 50 percent and online abuse has increased 400 percent in one year," the non-profit organization, Child Rights and You (CRY) was quoted as saying by Outlook. The statistics also revealed that an average of 350 crimes against children occurred each day during the pandemic.
