A 6-month-old boy died Tuesday after being mauled by a dog at his babysitter's home in Salisbury, North Carolina. Local police said they received a call about an incident at 716 Wilson Road.

Authorities said the babysitter sat the child down in the living room while she went out to clean out the backseat of her car. She was cleaning the vehicle so she could leave with the baby, local media reported.

"The babysitter heard her mother scream and ran back inside of the residence. There she found the child being attacked by her boxer/pit bull mix dog," according to a news release. The child was taken to the Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and then airlifted to Winston-Salem.

The child, identified as Jacari Long, died from the injuries, police said. The dog was taken by Rowan County Animal Control.

It remains unclear if charges will be filed against the babysitter. The incident remained under investigation.

There have been several recent incidents in which children have been attacked by dogs. Pit bull and boxer breeds are ferocious and on many occasions attack unprovoked.

Last month, a South Carolina woman was mauled to death by her dogs with whom she was spotted wrestling outside her mobile home. Neighbors reportedly saw the animals, both boxer-mixes, turning on their owner and "eating her alive."

In another recent incident, a four-year-old boy's arm was ripped off by a husky in Layton, Utah. According to reports, the boy stuck his arm through a vinyl fence between his house and his neighbor's where there were two huskies. The boy reached out to pet the huskies when one of them bit him on his mid-forearm.

“The boy had a sock on his hand and was attempting to play with the two dogs when one of them bit him,” Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook said.
