In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old man was shot dead for allegedly throwing stones at a pet dog. The incident took place Sunday on a road in northeast Delhi's Welcome Colony.

According to local reports, the deceased man -- identified as Aafaq Ali, a tailor by profession -- was passing by the house of the accused, when he heard the pet dog barking at him. Ali picked up stones and started hurling them at the dog, that allegedly was trying to bite him.

The dog owner, identified only by name Mehtab, saw Ali hitting the animal with stones. He then rushed into his house to bring a gun. After a short argument, the dog owner shot Ali with his gun, local media Times Now reported.

Ali's father-in-law called police, reporting that his son-in-law had been shot by someone. The victim, a father of three, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

"This is not the first time Mehtab has got into an argument with someone over the dog. He used to feed the dog that use to be a stray one. As a result, it stayed back at his house. The animal had a tendency to snap at passersby. If anyone protested against this, Mehtab would confront them," Ali's father-in-law said.

The police have registered a murder case against the dog's owner, who has reportedly fled after the incident. Police said Mehtab was a habitual criminal with more than 20 cases of robbery and extortion filed against him.

"Why was my brother murdered, he was not a criminal. Why are criminals roaming free and innocent people like my brother are being murdered. I want the death penalty for my bother's murder, he should be caught immediately. The murderer has ruined our family by shooting my brother dead," Ali's sister told the Millennium Post.

In a similar incident that took place Thursday in California, a woman bit a jogger who pepper-sprayed her dog at a San Francisco Bay Area park. Alma Cadwalader, 19, who was arrested Friday, had taken her two pets for a walk on a trail in Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Castro Valley when one of them tried to bite a jogger. The jogger used pepper spray to fend off the animal and that's when the pet owner confronted and punched the jogger, a woman, when the latter tried to push her away. She then bit her forearm, leaving "significant wounds."
