As the year comes to a close, and with the United States currently in a government shutdown, two of the most recent opinion polls show President Donald Trump's job approval rating at 44 percent and with a disapproval rating above 50 percent.

According to an online Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey conducted on Dec. 24-25 of 1,473 registered voters, Trump's approval rating was at 44 percent — a two-point drop from the same poll conducted last month, which had him at 46 percent. Of the 44 percent that currently approves of the president's job performance, 24 percent "somewhat" approve and 20 percent "strongly" approve.

The same poll showed that 56 percent disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president. The 56 percent was comprised of 36 percent who strongly disapprove and 19 percent who somewhat disapprove.

The Harvard CAPS/Harris poll did not note whether it was supervised by co-directors Harvard Professor Stephen Ansolabehere and Mark Penn, a frequent defender of Trump in the media.

Trump's approval rating is similar to Republicans' approval rating, which received a 42 percent approval rating and a 58 percent disapproval rating.

FiveThirtyEight.com gives Harris Interactive a "C plus" grade for accuracy, while Harvard also received a "C plus," though only one Harvard poll was analyzed by the data-analysis website.

An Economist/YouGov poll, which surveyed 1,293 registered voters, also showed Trump at 44 percent, but with a lower disapproval rating (52 percent) than the Harvard CAPS/Harris poll.

Trump's ratings haven't shifted much, according to Economist/YouGov. The last two polls showed Trump with a 43 percent approval rating and a 54 percent disapproval rating. At this point last year, Trump had a 43 approval rating and a 53 disapproval rating.

FiveThirtyEight gives YouGov a "B" grade for accuracy.

Two other recent polls also have Trump with a disapproval rating that is higher than his approval rating.

Rasmussen Reports, a polling organization that Trump often cites, released a poll last week that showed Trump at 47 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval.

Rasmussen was the only polling organization in 2018 that showed Trump with a higher approval rating than his disapproval rating. FiveThirtyEight gives Rasmussen a "C plus" grade for accuracy.

The most recent weekly Gallup Poll, which has a "B" grade for accuracy from FiveThirtyEight, showed Trump at a 40 percent approval rating and a 55 percent disapproval.

The Real Clear Politics' average has Trump's approval at 42.7 percent and his disapproval at 52.2 percent.
