A “Downton Abbey” movie has been rumored to be in the works since the end of the series was announced, but now it looks closer than ever to actually happening. NBC Universal International Studios President Michael Edelstein confirmed that the movie script is being written.

“There’s a movie in the works,” Michael Edelstein, president at NBCUniversal International Studios, told Associated Press at the opening of “Downton Abbey: The Exhibition” in Singapore. “It’s been in the works for some time. We are working on getting the script right, and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the [cast] together. … But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

However, getting the cast together is going to be a serious task. They’ve all moved on to other projects. This is what the cast has been up to since “Downton,” which aired on PBS in the U.S., left the airwaves in early 2016:

Michelle Dockery: The Lady Mary actress is currently starring as a con woman in TNT’s “Good Behavior.” The drama was renewed for a second season last year. She’ll also be in the Netflix series “Godless,” and she appeared in the dramatic film “The Sense of an Ending” earlier this year.

Laura Carmichael: The Lady Edith actress has kept a relatively low profile. She appeared in the drama “A United Kingdom,” starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, last year. She also played a part in the Netflix thriller “Marcella.”

Hugh Bonneville: After playing the Crawley family patriarch, Bonneville has kept busy with several roles on TV and in theaters. He lends his voice to “Sofia the First” as Book Narrator, and he appeared in shows like “Galavant” and “The Hollow Crown.” He recently wrapped filming on “Breathe,” a romantic drama featuring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, and he is currently filming the family flick “Paddington 2.” Later this year, he will work on the drama “The Rock Pile,” following a war correspondent for Time magazine.

Elizabeth McGovern: Since finishing “Downton Abbey,” the Cora actress has been focusing on movies. She appeared in 2016’s “Showing Roots” and has completed filming on “A Name Without a Place” and “The Commuter.”

Jim Carter: The actor who played trusted butler Carson has been doing some voice work. You can hear him as Cogman in “Transformers: The Last Knight” and Rookery in “The Little Vampire 3D.” He also recently finished filming “Swimming with Men,” a comedic movie.

Joanna Frogatt: The Anna actress has been trying some very different roles since she finished “Downton.” She starred in “Dark Angel,” a miniseries about serial killer Mary Ann Cotton last year. She also has been in the movies “Starfish,” “A Street Cat Named Bob,” “A Crooked Somebody” and “One Last Thing.” She’ll return to the small screen in Sundance TV’s “Liar” later this year.

Brendan Coyle: The Mr. Bates actor has been making his mark in both the film and TV worlds since “Downton Abbey” ended. He has appeared on the small screen in “12 Monkeys” and is filming the drama “Requiem.” On the silver screen, Coyle appeared in the dramas “Me Before You” and “Unless.” He’ll soon film the historical drama “The Rising: 1916” and the literary drama “The Butterfly in the Typewriter.”

Lesley Nicol: Mrs. Patmore has officially left the kitchen. Nicol scored a role on the now-canceled Shondaland drama “The Catch” and appeared in the “Ghostbusters” reboot. She’ll hit the big screen again this summer when she voices Nobel Moderator in “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.”

Allen Leech: The Tom Branson actor appeared in the film “The Hunter’s Prayer” this year, and he starred in the thriller TV series “Bellevue” with Anna Paquin. Leech is currently gracing the stage stateside. He is starring in “Constellations” with Ginnifer Goodwin at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles through July 23.

The great Maggie Smith, meanwhile, has not appeared onscreen since wrapping up the Dowager Countess’ storyline.

It isn’t clear yet which cast members will return for the “Downton Abbey” movie or when the film will be released. Stay tuned for updates.
