  • Ed Sheeran performed "Shivers" and "Overpass Graffiti" on "Saturday Night Live"
  • He announced earlier this week that he was out of quarantine and prepping for the weekend's performance
  • The singer said his "SNL" appearance was never really in doubt despite his COVID-19 diagnosis

Ed Sheeran hit the "Saturday Night Live" stage for the third time, weeks after a positive COVID-19 test threatened to postpone his plans to perform on the show.

Last month, Sheeran announced his diagnosis and went into quarantine, just a day after "SNL" announced on Oct. 23 that he would be appearing on the show as a musical guest. Earlier this week, the British singer finished his isolation period and was cleared to resume planned appearances, including "SNL," Entertainment Tonight reported.

Sheeran first appeared in a "Dionne Warwick Show" sketch as a celebrity guest before taking the Studio 8H stage to perform two songs, "Shivers" and "Overpass Graffiti."

He wore a fire red sweater, dark wash jeans and sneakers as he strummed his guitar for his performance of "Shivers," the second single from his latest album "=," which was released on Oct. 29. The audience cheered and applauded him after his performance. He appeared to be in good spirits and had a big smile on his face on stage.

Sheeran later returned to cap off the night with an upbeat performance of "Overpass Graffiti." For his second appearance, he changed outfits and opted for a white sweater and black sneakers. After his performance, he fist-bumped members of his band.

An unnamed source previously told Page Six that "SNL" producers were scrambling to find a replacement after Sheeran — who is vaccinated against COVID-19 — announced his diagnosis.

However, the singer said on SiriusXM’s "The Howard Stern Show" that he had always known he would make it to "SNL" because his performance was still two weeks away when he first tested positive for the virus.

Sheeran also shared that he had "really, really, really bad symptoms" for about three days. But after that, things got better. The singer confirmed that he was vaccinated and had a breakthrough case.

"I don't know why there was a huge uproar about that. Everyone was saying they were scrambling to find a replacement, [but] I was always playing that," he explained. "I tested for COVID, and I announced it a couple days afterward because I had to cancel stuff, basically. But it’s quite an odd thing, getting that and then having to announce it to the world, and then suddenly… Like, I’m now out of it now, and I'm still sort of being treated [like I have it]."

Sheeran added that he wasn't comfortable sharing the news publicly, but he had to cancel three big events in England due to the diagnosis. He didn't want to be rude and make excuses for his absence, so he decided to be honest by sharing the truth.

Sheeran also sang his solo versions of "Shivers" and "Overpass Graffiti" during his remote appearance on Stern's show.
