Lucy Liu as Joan Watson
Joan (Lucy Liu) finds a new apartment for Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) in Season 5, episode 2 of “Elementary.” CBS

As part of Joan’s (Lucy Liu) personal mission to help Shinwell (Nelsan Ellis) reenter society, Sherlock’s (Jonny Lee Miller) crime-solving partner finds a new apartment for the ex-convict.

In a sneak peek for this week’s episode, Joan brings Shinwell to his new residence, which she found with the help of her real estate agent sister Lin (Samantha Quan).

“I know it’s not much but the price is right,” Joan tells Shinwell as he walks around the studio apartment.

Even though Shinwell doesn’t appear excited about his new digs, he is interested to know whether his new landlord knows about his background.

“So the landlord knows about my record, right? That I’m on parole,” he asks Joan.

“Yes, he does. He and my sister are friends, and she vouched for you,” the former surgeon replies.

Although it’s pretty apparent that the apartment is not the kind of home Shinwell is dreaming of, he has nothing to complain about.

“I mean it’s a … house and that’s all that matters,” he tells Joan.

To ease Shinwell’s burden, Joan gives him a little pep talk. “It’s like we’re coming from multiple gunshot wounds. You don’t just go from rebuilding your organs to running a marathon overnight. It’s a process,” she says of starting a new life after prison. “It’s take time. It’s slow and painful. But you get there.”

“You say doc. I believe it,” Shinwell replies.

Though it seems that Joan and Shinwell are starting to build friendship with each other, Liu told Entertainment Weekly that Sherlock and Shinwell’s relationship with each other is a completely different story.

“He is bringing with him an extra layer for both of us in different ways,” Liu said of how Shinwell’s arrival affects both Joan and Sherlock. “[But] it looks like Holmes might not be always getting along with the new guy. They’re not easy with one another.”
