In a horrific incident, a seven-year-old girl was killed by an elephant in the eastern Indian state of Odisha on Thursday. According to local reports, the elephant snatched the girl using its trunk while she was in her bed.

The elephant allegedly dragged the girl outside and then crushed her to death. The girl, identified as Sini Munda, was asleep beside her brother and sister when the animal attacked. The elephant tore down part of a wall and grabbed the girl before trampling the child.

The child's brother and sister were also injured in the incident as the wall collapsed on top of them. They were said to be in critical condition.

This incident comes months after an elephant went on a rampage in the same area in April killing five people. In this incident, the elephant reportedly charged at a family-of-three while they were sleeping on the terrace of a house. The three people died on spot. It then went on to attack two more people the same night, both of who were later declared dead, according to the Hindu.

According to reports, as many as 92 people died in elephant attacks in the state, highest in a single year in 2018-19.

“Last year’s 92 human deaths in elephant attack was the highest ever recorded human casualty in a year. Acute human-elephant conflict continues unabated due to total lack of concern of Odisha forest department. We anticipate more casualties this year as well,” Biswajit Mohanty of Wildlife Society of Orissa (WSO), an environmental pressure group, said in April.
