Cookie and Candace

Just when you thought the Lyon family couldn't get anymore dysfunctional on Fox's "Empire," prepare to meet Cookie's sister, Candace (Vivica A. Fox), in episode 8, titled "My Bad Parts." Candace is not shy from sharing judgement and is supposed to be the good girl of the three sisters.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Ilene Chaiken said fans of "Empire" will get to learn why Cookie is the way that she is and where she came from when Candace arrives. Although her sister Carol (Tasha Smith) has appeared on the show several times, this will be the first time we get to see what made Cookie and her sisters into the people they are. Chaiken said they plan on using the present day versions of the sisters to show why Cookie is who she is.

"You can just imagine that this is who they are, this is who they've always been and they interacted that way as girls and when they all get together, everyone reverts to her child self," Chaiken dished. "You learn that Carol was always the follower, the most susceptible one; Cookie was the bad girl who could really take care of her self and who took care of Carol in spite of herself; and Candace was the well-behaved and judgmental older sister who made her younger sisters, and especially Cookie, miserable with her attitude."

"Empire" has used flashbacks as a way to further tell the stories of the characters on the show. For example, last season showed a lot of flashbacks of Cookie while she was in prison and what she was like with Lucious before she went to prison. This season, the show has been digging deeper into why Lucious is the way he is. In the Lucious flashbacks, he's shown as a young child dealing with a mentally unstable mother, Leah Walker (Kelly Rowland). Chaiken added that more will be revealed about what Lucious went through as a child as Season 2 of the hip-hop drama rolls on.

Fox was cast as Cookie's sister in September. Chaiken told Entertainment Weekly, "Cookie’s other family members are troublesome to say the least."

Although flashbacks won't be shown of Cookie, Lee Daniels, the other showrunner of "Empire," has mentioned that there is a good possibility we could see a spinoff series some day focusing on a young Cookie as she grew up in Philadelphia. Fox has been rumored to star in the Cookie spinoff if it happens, but there is nothing concrete at this time, Variety reports. Daniels pitched the idea of having an "Empire" spinoff at TCA this summer.

"I think there is going to be a spinoff from ‘Empire’ without question," Daniels dished to Variety. "There is so much ripe story there."
