An elderly man and his adult son who were found with knife wounds in a home in Oita Prefecture, Japan, on New Year's Day, likely killed each other following an argument, police said.

Akenotakao resident Seiji Miura, 79, and his 47-year-old son Yudai, of Minamizuru, were found lying down and covered in blood in an Oita City house Saturday, NHK reported.

Seiji's unnamed 78-year-old wife initially called police after being awoken by the sound of a loud argument in the residence's downstairs living room in the middle of the night, Japan Today reported, citing newspaper Sankei Shimbun.

She found her husband and son injured after going downstairs to see what was happening and reported the situation to authorities at around 1:30 a.m. that day.

Responding officers entered the first floor of the two-story home and found Seiji and Yudai with wounds that appeared to have been caused by a knife. Additionally, bloodied knives were found at the scene, police said.

The father and son were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

It is likely that Seiji and Yudai killed each other as an investigation revealed that the two men had a fight prior to their deaths, police said. There was also no sign that anyone else had entered the house.

Police did not disclose any possible reason behind the alleged argument.

In a similar story, a father and son in Minnesota shot each other last year following an argument over living arrangements, resulting in the former's death.

Royal Terrell Arrington, 25, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with two counts of second-degree murder — with intent and while committing a felony — in connection to the fatal shooting of his father of the same name.

Police found the elder Arrington, 44, lying on his back in the hallway of an apartment building in the 1200 block of Westminster Street on Sept. 24 last year while responding to a report of shots being fired.

The father, who had multiple gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Officers discovered that the younger Arrington had been dropped off at Regions Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left arm as well as a hole in one of his cheeks, and he was interviewed.

Authorities said that the father and son were estranged and that the latter stayed at an apartment building with a family member and others.

However, an argument arose over the living arrangements, and the 44-year-old Arrington came to the apartment to help sort things out. He then crossed paths with his son in the hallway.

The son initially told authorities multiple versions of the story and acted surprised when told that his father had been shot, but he later admitted to shooting his father twice.

However, he did not claim responsibility for the other six gunshot wounds found on his father's body.

Arrington, who had a criminal history that included assault, theft, drugs and lying to police, was scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 1, 2021.
