The World Figure Skating Championships comes to a close this weekend at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. With the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang looming, there has been some added excitement about this year's competition.

The men will compete on Saturday in the free skate with Javier Sanchez (109.05) of Spain leading after the short program. He is followed by Shoma Uno (104.86), and Patrick Chan (102.13). Also in contention are Jin Boyang of China, Yuzura Hanya of Japan and Nathan Chen of the United States.

History was made on the women's side. Russian 17-year-old Evgenia Medvedeva broke her own world record with 233.41 points and became the first female skater to win back-to-back world titles since American Michelle Kwan in 2000 and 2001.

The silver and bronze went to Canadians, Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman, respectively.

While no American received a medal, the U.S. had a strong showing from 17-year-old Karen Chen of Freemont, California, who finished fourth. She was followed by veteran Ashley Wagner, who came in 7th place after a 6th place finish at the Sochi Games in 2014. Mariah Bell, a 20-year-old from Oklahoma, finished 12th.

The World Championships that precede the Winter Olympics often provides an important preview of what may come next year. In 2013, Yuna Kim of South Korea took the gold in London, Ontario, and later controversially was denied the gold in Sochi. Italy's Carolina Kostner received the silver in 2013 and then took the bronze in Sochi.
