“The Flash” Season 5 is coming to a close, but that isn’t the end of Barry Allen’s story. The CW superhero show is set to return next season.

DC Comics fans didn’t even have to wait until May to find out if the show was canceled or renewed. The CW awarded the show an early renewal in January.

“The Flash” was never in any real danger of cancellation. Season 6 became a foregone conclusion after the Arrowverse crossover “Elseworlds” revealed that “Crisis on Infinite Earths” would be the next epic team up. Plus, the ratings have remained good for The CW.

Season 5, which ends Tuesday, has been averaging 1.7 million viewers each week with .61 in the 18-49 demographic, according to TV Series Finale. That makes it the top show on The CW in both demo and overall viewership.

The CW made history earlier this month when it decided not to cancel a single show in its lineup. “Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “iZombie” were given final seasons last year. Otherwise, everything is coming back for the 2019-2020 season.

Still, the Arrowverse will finally have to say goodbye to one show next season. “Arrow” was renewed for Season 8, but the 10-episode season will be its last. Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) will likely be around to say goodbye. After all, the series is set to end around the time of the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover. “Arrow,” the show that lauched The CW’s DC TV universe, will be the first in the Arrowverse to say goodbye.

Before fans can worry about next year’s “Crisis,” they’ll have to hope Tuesday’s finale goes well. Expect plenty of family drama in the final hour, according to showrunner Todd Helbing.

“There have been a lot of bumps along the road, and we wanted to run Barry and Iris through a truncated, fast-forward version of parenthood. We wanted to run them through as many issues and problems and put as many hurdles in front of them as we could. So in the finale, they’ve gone through quite a bit and their bonds have never been tighter,” Helbing told Entertainment Weekly. “With Barry and Iris as parents, it’s also [a question of] how do you help your child when you know they’ve made a lot of mistakes and get them to react in a positive way? Then you sort of see the repercussions of that. There’s a lot of themes that we hit in the finale, but family and legacy, and the trials and tribulations of what it’s like to be parents and a child in the heightened scenario.”

Season 6 will bring a new showrunner. Eric Wallace, who has been with the show since Season 4, will take over.

“The Flash” Season 5 finale airs Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
