The curtains wil close on “Fosse/Verdon” tonight, and fans should enjoy the Season 1 finale while it lasts. The FX drama will not return for Season 2.

The show isn’t technically canceled. “Fosse/Verdon” was always conceived as a miniseries, so the eight-episode season was not intended to be renewed. Though some successful limited series earn a second season (like “Big Little Lies” or “The Sinner”), neither the ratings nor the story seem to warrant a return to the small screen.

“Fosse/Verdon” has been averaging less than half a million viewers each week with 0.11 in the 18-49 demographic, according to TV Series Finale. It’s the lowest-ranking show on FX in the demographic. It is, however, bringing in a few more overall viewers than renewed shows “Baskets” and “Better Things.”

Though the ratings aren’t particularly impressive, critics have adored the series. Michelle Williams is getting plenty of Emmy buzz for her portrayal of Gwen Verdon. Sam Rockwell’s performance as Bob Fosse is also highly praised. The show is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus sitting at 83 percent ahead of Tuesday’s series finale.

The storyline is also coming to an end. FX has advertised that “Fosse/Verdon” spans five decades, following the true story of famed choreographer Bob Fosse and Broadway dancer Gwen Verdon. Fans know that Fosse died of a heart attack in 1987, so it would seem like the drama is probably going to cover the end of his life.

Tonight’s finale, directed by Thomas Kail, will show Gwen looking at what’s next while Bob laments on his past. “Gwen looks ahead to an uncertain future, as Bob tells the story of his life on film,” the logline teases.

The “Fosse/Verdon” series finale airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT on FX. The episode is extended to 82 minutes, ending at 11:22 p.m. EDT.
