Fox News anchor Chris Wallace got into a heated discussion with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott about his failure to have an exception for rape and incest victims in the state’s new abortion law.

Part of the legislation in Senate Bill 8 states women cannot receive abortions after six weeks, which is when fetal heartbeats can usually be detected. There has been opposition against the bill because pregnant women may not be aware they are pregnant at that point.

On Sunday, Wallace questioned Abbott about the topic. Abbott, a Republican, insisted there was no need for the rape or incest exception because he planned to “eliminate all rapists."

“Well, there’s multiple things I have to say in answer to this but the first thing obviously is that survivors of sexual assault, they deserve support, care, and compassion, and Texas is stepping up to make sure that we provide that by signing a law and creating in the governor’s office a sexual assault survivors task force,” Abbott said.

“But separately from that, Chris, I got to point out about the ways that I have fought to go to arrest and apprehend and try to eliminate rape. I sought the death penalty.”

Wallace informed Abbott that a Republican state legislator planned on offering a new measure that would include an exception for incest and rape victims. The anchor then asked the governor if he would sign the bill.

Abbott insisted the bill would never be presented to him.

“First, I’ve got to tell you, Chris, you’re making a hypothetical that’s not going to happen because that bill is not going to reach my desk,” he said.

“But second, again, the goal is to protect the life of every child with a heartbeat.”

Senate Bill 8 went into effect on Sept. 1 and allows private citizens to sue anyone who is involved in aiding and abetting an abortion, including doctors and rideshare drivers.
