KEY POINTS

  • A travel vlog showed a van that looks the one Petito and Laundrie used in their cross-country trip
  • Vlogger Jenn Bethune said she has not heard back from the FBI after she uploaded the footage
  • The FBI said Sunday a body “consistent” with Petito’s description has been recovered

A video posted by family travel vloggers that showed what appeared to be the van Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, used during their cross-country trip, may have helped provide clues in the investigation that led to the discovery of human remains “consistent” with descriptions of Petito.

In the video posted by Jenn and Kyle Bethune on their YouTube channel “Red White & Bethune,” a white van strikingly similar to Petito and Laundrie’s 2012 Ford Transit van, was captured on the footage as the vlogging couple passed by an area in Grand Teton National Park’s Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area.

The video has been viewed more than 2 million times on the video-sharing site.

In an interview with Insider, Jenn Bethune said the footage was shot about 6 p.m., Aug. 27, around the same time Petito is believed to have gone missing. Bethune noted that she contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Sunday afternoon after finding the footage and was told to submit the material through the FBI’s online tip website. She has also spoken to Petito’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, but has yet to hear from the FBI since she uploaded the video on YouTube.

Bethune said she didn’t notice anything unusual about the van at the time they passed by it.

In zoomed-in stills from the Bethune family’s video, the rear door of the white van appears to be closing. However, Kyle Bethune said the “van looked pretty much abandoned.” Kyle added that she and Jenn thought whoever owned the vehicle may have gone hiking or “were just chilling inside.” Near the back door of the van, the footage also captured what appeared to be a slipper Petito believed to have worn during her travels that she documented on social media.

On Sunday, the FBI revealed that human remains “consistent with the description of Petito” were found in the vicinity of Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. An autopsy on the body recovered in the area is scheduled for Tuesday.

Petito, 22, was reported missing by her family on Sept. 11, more than a week after her fiancé returned home without the vlogger.

Meanwhile, the search for Laundrie, 23, ensues. His family informed local police last week that they haven’t seen their son since Sept. 14. Tagged as a “person of interest” in Petito's disappearance, Laundrie refused to speak with police and sought an attorney after he came back from the trip.

Former homicide detective Pat Diaz pointed out that investigators could have done more in obtaining warrants at the beginning of the probe, regardless if Laundrie spoke up or not.

By late Monday, the FBI said it has concluded a search at the Laundrie home in North Port. “No further details since this is an ongoing investigation,” the agency added.
