Samsung has already teased that it’s preparing new smartphones that feature different types of display cutouts and notches. Now, it looks like the very first Samsung phone to come with a notch will be the Galaxy M2.

The Samsung Galaxy M2 is believed to be the only budget offering from Samsung in 2019. It was reported in September that Samsung was planning on killing off its Galaxy J series, while the Galaxy A series will be given most of the spotlight in the upper mid-range segment. The hole left by the Galaxy J series will be filled by the new Galaxy M series, which will kick off with the release of the Galaxy M2 sometime next year.

The Galaxy M2 is also significant to Samsung since it’s believed to be the very first Android smartphone of the company to feature a notch. Phone Arena has created a couple of renders showing off what the notch on the Galaxy M2 will look like with the Infinity U design. The notch resembles the one that’s found on the Essential Phone, but it appears to be smaller. The site said that it’s still unsure if Samsung will use the Infinity U or the Infinity V, but it created the render to provide everyone with an idea of what it might look like. The Infinity V looks almost exactly the same as the Infinity U, but its notch features a sharper “v” shape.

Samsung has been actively avoiding putting a notch on any of its phones over the last year, but now the company has changed its tune. This may not be good news to users who aren’t fans of notches on smartphone displays, but it does allow Samsung to deliver smartphones that come very close to a real all-screen experience.

The Samsung Galaxy M2 is believed to have a 2340 x 1080 display with a screen aspect ratio of 19:9. Inside, the device is powered by the Exynos 7885 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It also has a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera. On the software side of things, the device appears to be running Android 8.1 Oreo straight out of the box. Information on the Galaxy M2’s specs were revealed in a recently leaked AnTuTu benchmark for a Samsung device with the model number SM-M205F, according to GSM Arena.

The Infinity U or the Infinity V may be destined for the Galaxy M2, but the Infinity O display might make its debut witj the Galaxy A8s. The Infinity O display features a circular cutout in the upper left side of the screen and it houses the front-facing camera. It’s believed that Samsung will launch the Galaxy A8s sometime in early 2019 just before the official announcement of the new Galaxy S10 lineup. The Galaxy S10 is also expected to adopt the Infinity O display.
