Episode 9 in Season 5 of “Game of Thrones” featured yet another shocking death of a character. In a recent interview, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss explained how the previous events on the show led up to the death and how it’s relevant to the TV series as a whole. [Spoiler alert]

Perhaps the youngest character to die brutally in the TV series so far was Shireen Baratheon, played by Kerry Ingram. The character was burnt alive under the orders of her father Stannis, played by Stephen Dillane. Speaking to EntertainmentWeekly, the Weiss said that the scene was supposed to be “awful” and that the death was “justified.”

The TV series is exploring the religious fanaticism of Stannis and the character’s previous experience has showed him the power of sacrifices offered by Melisandre. Benioff pointed out that when Stannis and Melisandre were seen on screen for the first time; they were burning people alive. Talking about Shireen’s death, Benioff explained that it was the “hardest choice” that Stannis had to make in his life; where he had to choose between ambition and familial love.

The sacrifice is expected to give Stannis a victory in a must-win battle against the Boltons, which is set to feature in the final episode of Season 5. Another character facing a losing battle on the show is Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke. The mother of dragons has been unable to quell the rebellion in Meereen and was last seen flying away on her dragon from Daznak’s Pit.

Michiel Huisman, who plays the role of Daario Naharis, spoke about the massive battle at the Daznka’s Pit in an interview with HBO, which is posted on the official MakingGameofThrones website. The actor said that Daenerys would not have been in this situation, had she listened to him and killed all the masters in Meereen.

When asked about what was running through Daario’s head when Daenerys flew away on her dragon, Huisman said that his character was “flabbergasted” and “blown away.” “It's almost divine to see her fly away on the dragon,” the actor said. Huisman also added that he had been advising the queen to “use those dragons” and that “finally, she’s listening."

The major elements of “Game of Thrones” Season 5 finale are the city of Meereen without Daenerys, Jon Show attempting to settle the Free Folk inside the Wall, Arya Stark’s reaction to Meryn Trant’s presence in the city and the result of Stannis’ sacrifice in the battle against Boltons. Fans are speculating which major characters could die next in the TV series.
