KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd lost 2-0 to City in the League Cup semi-final at Old Trafford
  • Fernandes joined Man Utd during 2020 January transfer window
  • He has netted 27 goals for Red Devils since then

Manchester United great Gary Neville revealed the "one problem" Manchester United have with their star midfielder Bruno Fernandes after the Red Devils’ 2-0 loss to arch-rivals Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final Wednesday.

With the win at Old Trafford, Pep Guardiola’s City are on track to chase their fourth straight League Cup title and will face Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

Manchester United failed to score Wednesday night despite having the playmakers such as Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, and Anthony Martial in the starting XI.

Fernandes, who moved from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United during the 2020 January transfer window, has been a great addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. From 30 Premier League matches, Fernandes has lost only three, while he has netted an aggregate of 27 competitive goals for the Old Trafford side.

Manchester United currently are level on points with Liverpool with a game in hand. Solskjaer’s side has majorly improved this season into title challengers, while Fernandes has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists.

Following Manchester United’s 2-0 loss to City at Old Trafford, 45-year-old Neville claimed Red Devils are not capable of winning without Fernandes.

“I don’t think anybody could think one person would have an impact on this Manchester United team [he has]. We all thought we’d need four or five players yet, with him in the team, they feel unbeatable. Without him, they’re nowhere near as good. The one problem Ole has is he can’t rotate him. In any game that matters he has to play,” Neville was quoted by talkSport, as saying in an interview.

Meanwhile, Man Utd boss Solskjaer was asked if he would play Fernandes in his side’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley next week.

“Well, we go into every game wanting to win, of course, we do. There will be a few changes, of course, there will as it's such a season that we have to. We have shown quality when we have had to do that before and we will make a few changes. I will see tomorrow [Thursday] morning who is fit and who is not fit and who is ready to go. He wants to play every game, Bruno,” added Ole. “Of course, it's a long season. Let's see what team we come with on Saturday so I'll have a chat with him about how he feels,” Solskjaer told Manchester United’s official website.
