  • Man City are looking to win their straight fourth League Cup title
  • Man Utd failed to score a goal in their semi-final clash Wednesday
  • Roy Keane believes Man Utd need a few more players

Manchester United great Roy Keane slammed Bruno Fernandes after the Red Devils lost 2-0 to city rivals Manchester City in the League Cup semi-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's side proved to be too strong for the hosts. English defender John Stones put Manchester City 1-0 up after five minutes into the second half. Brazil's 35-year-old Fernandinho netted City's second goal a few minutes before 90 minutes as the defending champions remain on track for a fourth straight League Cup title.

Keane, who represented Manchester United between 1993 and 2005, singled out the Portuguese midfielder, saying he "didn't do much" in the match.

"It's not easy, it's not easy winning football trophies. Fernandes has had great praise and over the past month, people have been comparing him to people like Eric Cantona etcetera. But Cantona [won trophies]. Fernandes didn't really do much tonight. The top players turn up on the big occasions, and that’s what the Cantona’s used to do to get their hands on trophies. And that’s where this team is a little bit short," Keane told Sky Sports after Man Utd's loss at home.

Keane, who ended his playing career at Scottish club Celtic, went on to add that the current Manchester United team needs one or two more players apart from a winning mentality.

"They'll probably need one or two more players to come into the squad, no doubt, and the mentality they need – may be the confidence of winning this semi-final to get them over the line and then you get momentum. And they just didn’t quite have it tonight," added Keane.

In the 2020-21 Premier League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Man Utd are currently tied on points with leaders Liverpool FC. A win against Burnley next week will take Manchester United to the top of the league table.

"The next game is always your most important game. Against Watford [in the FA Cup], Championship team, no doubt United will rotate and rest some players. And then Burnley certainly won’t be an easy game for them but you can’t take your eyes off the Liverpool game. If United go and win at Burnley and then win at Liverpool, they could be six points clear of Liverpool. Bizarre when you think of the start to the season that United had, so United, Ole, and the players have to stay positive and look forward to the upcoming games," Keane said further.
