The Girl Scouts of the USA announced it had received a $84.5 million donation from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott on Tuesday.

The funds will be awarded to 29 of its local organizations chosen by Scott and the national chapter. The donation accounts for the largest donation from a single individual ever given to the Girl Scouts.

Executives with Girl Scouts expressed how impactful the donations will be to their small programs.

"We are so appreciative of MacKenzie Scott's gift to Girl Scouts. This is a great accelerator for our ongoing efforts to help girls cultivate the skills and connections needed to lead in their own communities and globally," Girl Scouts of the USA CEO Sofia Chang said in a press release.

Girl Scouts said that it will use the donations to create more opportunities in communities that have been under engaged, innovate the program for the current interests and needs of the girls for future careers and mental wellness, along with improving its camp facilities and more.

Kristen Garcia-Hernandez, Girl Scouts council CEO in Southern Arizona, told the Associated Press that "gifts of this magnitude don't come around very often" for the organization.

Scott said in March that she has donated nearly $12 billion to 1,257 different groups since 2020. That same month Scott gave $275 million to Planned Parenthood, mentioning the donation came at a time of need for funds amid the attack on women's sexual and reproductive health care.

Scott received her fortune after divorcing the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, in 2019. After the split, Scott pledged to donate money to "underrepresented people from groups of all kinds."
