  • "God of War: Ragnarok" will pick up directly where the previous game left off
  • It will be the finale to the Norse saga
  • The game is expected to release next year

Sony has revealed the first trailer for “God of War: Ragnarok,” nearly one year after it was announced.

The trailer was shown during the recently-concluded PlayStation Showcase where a host of other highly-anticipated PlayStation games were revealed.

“God of War: Ragnarok” will pick up directly where the previous game left off, giving players a few opportunities to explore Kratos and Atreus’ relationship while pushing the narrative into grander territory.

As the title implies, the new game will revolve around Ragnarok, a series of events that eventually leads to the end of the world in Nordic myth. Director Eric Williams told Sony that this event will happen as part of the main story, so it’s likely that their rendition of the Norse pantheon will receive some sort of reckoning as the game moves forward.

Williams also noted that they were going to “cap off the Norse series” with “God of War: Ragnarok,” which implies that this will be the last “God of War” game set in Scandinavia. Players can expect the game to tie up loose ends and finish the story between Kratos and Atreus before Santa Monica Studio moves on to the next potential title in the series.

As for gameplay, “God of War: Ragnarok” will retain the third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective of its predecessor. Battles will play out mostly the same, albeit with some new animations, abilities and enemies.

“Ragnarok” will focus heavily on the story, Williams said. Players will get to see the ordinary life of the father-son duo after the events of the first game. “Ragnarok” will have an emotional and dramatic story between Kratos and Atreus that ultimately ends with the involvement of the Norse gods.

The story will feature the appearance of several Norse gods, including Thor and possibly the All-father Odin himself. Tyr, the Norse god of war, will apparently play a major role in the story after he was revealed to be alive, despite the implications in the previous game that suggested otherwise.

“God of War: Ragnarok’s” Thor will be played by Ryan Hurst, who is best known for his role as Opie Winston in “Sons of Anarchy.” Tyr will be played by Ben Prendergast, who is known for his role as General Hux in “Star Wars Resistance” and the voice of Fuse in “Apex Legends.”

Christopher Judge and Sunny Suljic will reprise their roles and Kratos and Atreus.
