Google and YouTube are banning ads and demonetizing content from those who deny or make inaccurate claims about climate change to limit their revenue.

“We’ve heard directly from a growing number of our advertising and publisher partners who have expressed concerns about ads that run alongside or promote inaccurate claims about climate change,” Google said in a blog post. “Advertisers simply don’t want their ads to appear next to this content.”

According to Google, YouTube creators have also shared that they “don’t want ads promoting these claims to appear on their pages or videos.”

Google says the new restrictions will prohibit ads and monetization on content that contradicts the "well-established scientific consensus" on climate change. Limits will be placed on content calling climate change a hoax, denying greenhouse gas emissions, and more.

The company says it will continue to allow ads and the monetization of content that discusses other climate-related topics, including public debates on climate policy and new research.

Google said it consulted with contributing members of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports to develop the policy.

The new policy will take effect in November.

Earlier this week, Google rolled out new features designed to help users reduce their carbon footprint, including a search function to determine which flights give out lower emissions.
