KEY POINTS

  • BTS got its second Grammy nomination Tuesday
  • Last year, the group was also nominated under the same category for "Dynamite"
  • BTS received three trophies at the recently concluded AMAs

The list of nominees for the 2022 Grammy Awards is out, and the South Korean sensation BTS has scored a single nomination under the Best Pop Duo/Group category for its track, "Butter." Though this is another milestone for the group, some fans are not happy about it, claiming the boys have been "scammed."

The Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards in a series of tweets Tuesday night. According to its list, BTS' "Butter" is going against "Higher Power" by Coldplay, "Kiss Me More" by Doja Cat (Feat. SZA), "I Get a Kick Out of You" by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga and "Lonely" by Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award.

This is the second time the boy band has been nominated for a Grammy.

However, instead of celebrating the group's accomplishment, some ARMYs expressed their frustration.

"#SCAMMYs" trended worldwide as some fans thought the boy band should have received more than one nomination, including Best Music Video for "Permission To Dance," Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for "BE" and Record of the Year for "Butter."

A fan who goes by the user name @skyeeekv even tweeted a photo of a cardboard sign that read, "Our expectations for you were low but holy f--k."

In the caption, the fan wrote, "Funny how the #scammys got BTS only one and the same nomination after Butter literally achieved and is STILL achieving more than MUCH. So what's this called? Same sh-t different year? Or same sh-t different song?"

Another fan unleashed strong words against the Recording Academy and quoted a supposed statement from Forbes that said, "BTS will continue to tour and release music, and fans will continue to support them unabated regardless of Grammy recognition."

In the caption, the fan wrote, "Once a snake, always a snake #scammys."

Last year, BTS also earned one nomination under the Best Pop Duo/Group category for "Dynamite." ARMYs also expressed disappointment over this as they were expecting J-Hope, Jungkook, Jimin, V, J-Hope, RM and Jin to be nominated in three other categories, including Album of the Year for "Map Of The Soul: 7."

Despite some fans' strong reactions against the group's recent nomination, others wished the group well in its bid to score its first Grammy, which will also mark the first Grammy won by a K-pop artist.

"#SmoothlikeBTS," "#CongratulationsBTS" and "#BestPopDuo" also trended on Twitter on Tuesday as fans began anticipating another win for the group after the boys bagged three trophies at the American Music Awards on Sunday.

The 2022 Grammy Awards will broadcast live from Crypto.com Arena (formerly STAPLES Center) in Los Angeles on Jan. 31, 2022. It will be shown on CBC Television Network and will be livestreamed on Paramount+.
