One of the most exciting characters to be introduced in James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is Ego , the father of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).

Comic book fans know Ego (Kurt Russell) as a living planet, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has made some changes in the character and turned him into a “normal” person.

But who is this Ego from the franchise? The director shared more information about the character during an interview with Complex.

“Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he's learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell,” Gunn said. “I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.”

Meanwhile, Gunn earlier told The Daily Beast that he made no effort to connect “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” to the MCU, so it’s its own movie.

He said his movie is a “100 percent self-enclosed story,” so fans should just enjoy the movie as it is and stop trying to connect it to other Marvel movies such as “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Doctor Strange,” or “Thor: Ragnarok.”

“I know what their plans are,” Gunn added. “But there’s just nothing I do to service that within ‘Vol. 2’s’ story; all that’s important is ‘Vol. 2.’”

Despite Gunn’s statements, lead star Pratt is still holding out hope that his character, Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, will somehow find himself fighting alongside the Avengers.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” will hit theaters May 5.
