A violent altercation with the police resulted in the death of a man in the Hawaii State Capitol on Monday.

The unidentified man in his 20s was reportedly choking a sheriff’s deputy during a confrontation, which caused the latter to open fire. The man was fatally shot in the process. The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. local time (1:30 a.m. EST, Tuesday) and the injured man was rushed to the nearest hospital where he died. The reason behind the confrontation was not immediately known, Hawaii News Now reported.

A second man, believed to be in his 30s, who was present at the scene, also requested medical attention although he did not suffer any major injuries. He was reported to be in a stable condition.

Honolulu firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene and the area of the capitol near the Iolani Palace, and the rotunda was cordoned off. Heavy police presence was noticed even two hours after the shooting. The incident was under investigation.

This is a developing story.
