The biggest white diamond to ever be auctioned sold for $21.9 million at Christie’s auction house in Geneva on Wednesday.

“The Rock,” a 228.3-carat pear-shaped stone that is said to be larger than a golf ball and originally discovered in South Africa was sold by an unknown North American owner and purchased by a private collector over the phone, CNN reports.

Due to the diamond’s size, the auctioneer expected it to go for anywhere between $19-$30 million. There was hope that The Rock would break the world record for the most money spent on a white diamond, which is still held by a 163.41-carat D-color flawless diamond in 2017. According to The Jewellry Editor, that sold for $33.7 million.

The Rock did set a new world record at price per carat for a G-color diamond, however.

“When you look at the price per carat—100,000 per carat—this is the level of a D color diamond, and we achieved that for a G color diamond. So, in fact, we’re very pleased as are the sellers, as is the buyer,” Raul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewelry said, according to Yahoo News.

Prior to the auction, the head of Christie’s Jewelry Department in Geneva, Matt Fawcett, explained to Reuters just how unique the stone was.

“Often with these largest stones, they sacrifice some of the shape in order to keep the weight,” he said at the time. “This is a perfectly symmetrical pear-shape form and...one of the rarest gems ever to be sold at auction.”
