“The show must go on” was always the rule until COVID-19 came along. The pandemic forced Broadways shows to pause in March, and the June 7 Tony Awards were canceled. However, musical theater fans can celebrate an old favorite with a broadcast of “Grease.”

CBS, which typically broadcasts the Tonys, is airing “Grease Sing-A-Long” on Sunday, June 7. The movie musical, which is based on a 1971 Broadway show, features follow-along lyrics throughout each song in the 1978 film, which includes hits like "Summer Nights," "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and "Grease Lightning."

So how can Greasers and Pink Ladies watch the movie? “Grease” airs on TV on CBS on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. EDT. Those who are watching the sing-a-long online instead can head to CBS All Access at the same time to watch the live stream. An account will be required. The movie will end at 11 p.m. EDT.

While it is airing on Tony night, “Grease” is actually a part of CBS’ Sunday Night Movies programming block. Each week, CBS airs “iconic films from the Paramount Pictures library.”

While the film was released in 1978, “Grease Sing-A-Long” was a limited theatrical release in 2010. “Grease” also spawned a 1982 sequel, “Grease 2,” starring Michelle Pfieffer, and it’s available on-demand on Pluto TV. In 2016, Fox broadcast a live TV performance of “Grease Live,” starring Vanessa Hudgens, Julianne Hough and Aaron Tveit, which is currently available on CBS All Access.

It seems “Grease” is still the word more than 40 years later. HBO Max has ordered “Grease: Rydell High” straight to series. The spinoff will still take place in the 1950s but will focus on other characters.

The original movie follows Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) as they meet on the beach one summer. After falling in love, they go their separate ways but are surprised when Sandy happens to transfer to Danny’s school. Upon arriving, she learns that Danny is a tough guy with the T-Birds and she tries to fit in with the Pink Ladies.
