Huawei is expected to officially announce the Mate 20 Pro on Oct. 16, but leaked renders may have already revealed the upcoming handset. The Huawei flagship smartphone will be powered by the company’s own Kirin 980 system-on-chip, which Huawei claims will be more powerful than Apple’s A12 Bionic chip.

The renders for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro were leaked online by WinFuture. The set of images appears to confirm previously rumored details about the upcoming handset, including the square module for the triple-camera setup on its back. The renders also show that the Mate 20 Pro will be available in at least three colors: blue, black and the same “twilight” color that was introduced with the Huawei P20 Pro. It’s also rumored that the handset may arrive with a green color option.

The renders for Huawei Mate 20 Pro also confirm that the handset will arrive with thin side bezels and slim bottom “chin,” as pointed out by 9To5Google. The renders also show that the Mate 20 Pro will arrive with an iPhone X-style notch on top of its display. WinFuture writer Roland Quandt admits that the on-screen content shown in the renders have been altered to protect his sources. Instead of including the actual on-screen content, Quandt added leaked wallpapers. It was previously rumored that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro will arrive with a 6.3-inch OLED display.

Another thing that’s noticeable about the leaked renders is that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro doesn’t have a visible fingerprint sensor up front or on the back. This is because the handset is expected to arrive with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The only specification that has been confirmed by Huawei about the Mate 20 Pro is that it will be powered by the Kirin 980 SoC. The Kirin 980 was officially announced by Huawei earlier this month and it’s built using the 7nm process, same as Apple’s A12 Bionic chip. During a product briefing in Dubai, Huawei discussed its in-house processor and the company said it is “confident” that it will be better than the A12 Bionic, TechRadar has learned.

The Kirin 980 comes with 6.9 billion transistors, the same amount that’s on the A12 Bionic. Huawei said that the Kirin 980’s CPU is 75 percent faster than the previous generation, while its GPU is 46 percent faster. The company also claims that its chip is 57 percent better when it comes to power efficiency and 178 percent better on the GPU.

Huawei’s Kirin platform has always been able to keep up with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors, but it hasn’t caught up with Apple’s chips. However, if the company’s claims are true, then the Kirin 980 might be its very first SoC to match or even surpass Apple’s A12 Bionic chip. The A12 Bionic is currently powering the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR.
