A man was arrested after confessing to killing his wife, cutting her body into two and disposing of the remains in a canal in the north Bengal town of Siliguri in India, putting them in sacks and submerging them to avoid discovery, a police officer said Thursday.

According to the police officer, the man admitted to the crime during police questioning, which happened ten days after his wife had gone missing, The Times of India reported.

The accused, Prince Yadav, was hit by a bullet in a gunfire encounter with the police when he was taken to a spot for the recovery of the head of the woman, which he reportedly dumped in a pond.

According to police, Yadav hid a country-made pistol at the spot and used it against the police to escape. He confessed to killing Aradhana since she had allegedly "betrayed him" by marrying another person despite being his girlfriend.

Yadav brought his ex-lover to a temple before choking her in a sugarcane field. Yadav's cousin Sarvesh was reportedly an accomplice in the crime. The two then cut her body into six parts, put them in a polythene bag and threw it into a well, police said
