A series of deadly tornadoes scoured the U.S. Midwest on Friday, leaving residents stunned as they searched through the resultant debris and tried to piece their lives back together on Saturday.

The death toll as a result of the tornadoes stands at 34, with 16 dead in Kentucky, 14 in Indiana, three in Ohio, and one in Alabama, reported USA Today. Reports indicate that tornadoes were also wreaked havoc in Mississippi, Tennessee, Illinois, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.

The tornadoes came just two days after a violent storm system killed 13 people.
