The 1922 Committee, comprised of Conservative backbench MPs announced this morning that it has reached the threshold of signatures required to trigger a no confidence vote in the party leader and prime minister, Theresa May. This means that at least 48 members of May's party have written to the Committee. For the vote to pass however, there needs to be a majority of the party in favour of ousting the PM - in this case 158 votes from a possible 315. If May is forced to relinquish her position after tonight's vote (due to be held between 6pm and 8pm), which Conservative MPs are most likely to be accepted by the general public as the new prime minister?

According to a recent YouGov poll, Boris Johnson would be at the top of the public's list. 32 percent said that they view the MP favourably. May also has a 32 percent rating, but since the survey was completed on 31 October, this may well have dropped significantly. One thing which is clear though, is that there is far from a universally popular candidate in the eyes of the public, should it come down to a general election.
