  • Apple is expected to release new flagship iPhones soon
  • One of these will be called the "iPhone 12 mini," a leaker claims
  • This is confirmed by a document from an accessory maker

Apple will be putting the “mini” branding it uses on a variety of devices on a new smartphone included in the iPhone 12 Series, a leaker claims.

According to tipster L0vetodream, who has a good track record when it comes to Apple leaks, the Cupertino tech giant will be releasing a new “iPhone 12 mini” alongside three other devices in the iPhone 12 series. This will be the first iPhone to use the mini brand, indicating that it will be a small model.

Previous reports indicated that Apple is working on releasing four different iPhone 12 models soon. These include a 5.4-inch model, two 6.1-inch models, and a 6.7-inch model – the largest iPhone yet.

The 5.4-inch model was previously believed to be a lower-end handset called the iPhone 12. One 6.1-inch model is larger than this but is still a lower-end device believed to be called the iPhone 12 Max.

L0vetodream's leak changes the naming convention for these two devices. The 5.4-inch handset, which SlashGear believes to be smaller than or just as small as the original iPhone SE, will be called the “iPhone 12 mini.” The lower-end 6.1-inch model will simply be called the “iPhone 12.” The “Max” branding will then be reserved for the largest flagship, the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Is this true?

While some might wonder if L0vetodream's leak is true, it's worth noting that the leaker has an 88.7% accurate track record when it comes to leaks about Apple's products, AppleTrack reported.

The leaker is also not the first to make such a claim. French-speaking site iPhonesoft.fr (via Google Translate) also made the same claim earlier this month.

The site said that according to a document it obtained from accessory maker ESR, Apple will use the name “iPhone 12 Mini” for the smallest iPhone that it will release this year. This device will be launched alongside the “iPhone 12,” “iPhone 12 Pro” and “iPhone 12 Pro Max.”

The report added that since Apple uses the name “mini” on smaller versions of some devices, like the iPad mini, it would be “logical” to call the 5.4-inch iPhone “iPhone 12 Mini” because it will simply be a smaller version of the 6.1-inch iPhone 12.

That said, it remains to be seen whether Apple will indeed use the “mini” brand on a flagship iPhone this year. The company is expected to announce the iPhones next month.
